There are many considerations when preparing product design, DFM and prototyping for China.
China has extensive production capacities. However, we have found that engineering and design should be done elsewhere.
Product design and prototyping for China
Chinese engineers do not have the expertise of European or American engineers. Western engineers will be more attuned to how products can be made compliant in their own country. Most products have to go through some product tests to be certified in America or Europe. There are not many engineers outside your country who are experts in these processes.
Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
Factories in China also don’t offer Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reports. DFMs are an assessment of how easy it is to manufacture a product, with recommendations to improve the design to make it easier to manufacture.
Some engineers quote “manufacturers to determine the material” or the like on material labels for new designs. It is better if you let the technician specify the material than the factory estimate. Even if the factory understands what the part is to be used for, it doesn’t know how it affects other components of the part or how it affects product compliance. We therefore recommended that you do all design work locally. Prototypes can continue to be manufactured in China at effective costs.
